Boys come to S. Thomas’ College from every part of Sri Lanka, and boarding has been part of the college from the very beginning.

The hostel and sick room
The hostel has been reorganised to give boarders everything they need, so that they do not feel far from home. Boarding is essential for a college whose students come from all over the country. Hostel rules can feel strict to some boys, but many parents value the discipline that boarding gives.
Life as a boarder
Boarding is a transformative experience: learning to live in a community where respect, discipline, personal growth and academic excellence come first.
Taking many small steps towards maturity is one of the quiet benefits of boarding at S. Thomas’. Boys learn to get along with others, to be teachable and open to guidance, to adapt to the routine of the college, and to be considerate towards their friends while respecting their seniors. Integrity and decency matter above all.
Boarding brings rules about many parts of daily life, which a teenager may sometimes find intrusive. But the lessons learned here lay a solid foundation for adult life: boys learn to be responsible and accountable for their actions. Every boarder is bound by a code of honour and discipline, and is expected to uphold the good name of the college and of those who came before him.
For the teachers who look after the boarders, this is a vocation rather than a job. They become important role models in each boy’s life.

The hostel is where boys discover what they are capable of, and where success is celebrated. One boarder, Govindu Sashmitha, gained 9 A passes in the G.C.E. (O/L) 2021 examination without attending any private tuition classes.
