Service of Nine Lessons and Carols

The Service of Nine Lessons and Carols was held on the 4th of December 2016 at the Keble Memorial Hall. The Primary, Senior and Staff Choirs participated at this service.

Ven. Keerthisiri Fernando, Archdeacon of Nuwara Eliya / Acting Headmaster delivered the Christmas message.

"XbotiX 2016" Robotic Competition

The “XbotiX 2016” Robotic Competition was held at the University of Ruhuna on October 19th, 2016.  Two groups, both senior and junior represented S. Thomas’ College, Bandarawela at this inter-school competition.  “It is encouraging to note the enthusiasm and commitment of our boys towards robotics” said Mr J C Narangoda, Master-in-charge of the Robotic Club who accompanied them to the university in Galle.

 


 

Vani Vizha 2016

The annual Vani Vizha ceremony took place at the Keble Memorial Hall on October 8th, 2016. Mr. Lanin Madiwanam, Deputy Commissioner, Educational Publications Department, Battaramulla graced the occasion as the chief guest.
The event was filled with numerous group activities where the Hindu students were able to showcase their talents.

 


Opening of A/L IT Laboratory

The new Advanced Level IT laboratory was declared open by Mr. R.M.P. Ratnayake, Uva Provincial Director of Education on the 29th of September, 2016.  STC Bandarawela is now equipped with IT laboratories in the primary, middle and A/L sections and thereby cater to all the students of the school.


Primary School Concert

The Primary School Concert was held on the 24th of September, 2016 at the Keble Memorial Hall.  The chief guest for the event was Mr. Nihal Gunaratne, Divisional Secretary of Bandarawela.

The primary children displayed their talents through various songs, dance and drama.  The concert was a very joyous and colourful event.


SCM Day

The Student Christian Movement (SCM) Day 2016 was held on the 22nd of September 2016 at the Keble Memorial Hall.  The theme used this year was "Time for change". Rev. Fr. Modestus Fernando, Family Apostolate, Diocese of Badulla graced the occasion as the chief preacher.


Primary School Exhibition

The Primary School Exhibition was held on the 9th of September, 2016 at the primary school.  The children were able to showcase their talents and creativity at this exhibition.  The event was highly appreciated by parents, staff and senior students.


Annual Prize Giving

The Annual Prize Giving was held on Friday, 29th July 2016 at the Keble Memorial Hall.  The chief guest was Professor Amal S. Kumarage, Senior Professor, Department of Transport & Logistics Management and Mrs. Premila Kumarage.

 International Day of Yoga

 

Students of S. Thomas' College, Bandarawela took part in the International Day of Yoga organised by the "Sadhana Yoga Shrushti" at the Bandarawela MC Grounds on the 18th of June, 2016.


Uva Province Open Ranking Table Tennis Championship

 

The Uva Province Open Ranking Table Tennis Championship was conducted by the S. Thomas’ College Table Tennis Club and was held on the 11th and 12th of June, 2016 at the SLA Ratnayake Memorial Indoor Stadium.  Mr. Nihal Gunaratne, Divisional Secretary of Bandarawela graced the occasion as the chief guest.

Savith Basnayake, student of S. Thomas' College, Bandarawela performed exceptionally well and was judged the champion in the Under 15, 18, 21 Boys and Men's Open Single.  He was also awarded  the Most Outstanding Player – Men's.  Thisum Basnayake, also from STC Bandarawela was the Runner Up in the Under 15 boys category.


Milad-Un-Nabi Celebrations

The Milad-Un-Nabi Celebrations was held on the 4th of June in the Keble Memorial Hall.  Mr. D.T.M. Zameen M. Saleem General Manager, Sri Lanka Telecom and Mrs. Saleem graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.


Annual Kalai Vizha

The Annual Kalai Vizha programme was held on Saturday 28th May, 2016 at the Keble Memorial Hall amidst a large gathering of students, parents, staff and well wishers.  The chief guest for the occasion was Her Excellency Radha Venkataraman, Assistant High Commissioner of India in Sri Lanka.

Many students displayed their talents through songs, dance and drama and the programme was concluded by a prize distribution.  The chief guest also donated several valuable books to schools and libraries in the Uva province.


The 11th  National  Cuboree

The 11th National Cuboree  and  Centenary  Celebration for  the  formation  of Cub Scouts  in Sri Lanka was held from the 13th to the 15th of May 2016 at Richmond College Galle with the participation of approximately 5000 cubs, their Akelas and District Commissioners of all Scout Districts. Sixteen Cubs represented S. Thomas’ College, Bandarawela Mrs. Harshani Mahakumarage and Mrs. Sumithira Gnananesan Cub Scout Leaders accompanied the students.


Professional development and career guidance programme

Professor Mahesh Nirmalan, Professor of Medical Education and Hon. Consultant in Critical Care Medicine at the University of Manchester conducted a professional development and career guidance programme on May 9th, 2016 at the Keble Memorial Hall.  Professor Mahesh Nirmalan is an old boy of S. Thomas' College, Bandarawela.


Badminton Champions

B Division Champs: S.L.A. Ratnayake Memorial All Island Under 16 Badminton Team Championships TournamentB Division Champs: S.L.A. Ratnayake Memorial All Island Under 16 Badminton Team Championships Tournament

The College badminton team emerged B Division champions at the S.L.A. Ratnayake Memorial All Island Under 16 Badminton Team Championships Tournament. The team was coached by Mr. Sahan Rathnayake and the Master-in-charge was Mr. Thilak Jayasiri.  This event was held from April 22nd to the 25th at S. Thomas' College, Bandarawela where 114 teams from various parts of the island took part.  This annual tournament has been sponsored by the College and conducted successfully for the last 24 years.

Mr. Oshara Panditharathne, Principal of Lumbini College and President of the Sri Lanka Schools Badminton Association graced the occasion as the chief guest.

 


Uva Thomian Cricket Encounter

The Uva Thomian Cricket Encounter was held on 9th April, 2016 at the grounds of STC Gurutalawa.  The STC Gurutalawa team beat STC Bandarawela at this popular 50 overs encounter.


Annual Easter Carol Service

The Easter Carol Service was held on Sunday 3rd April, 2016 at the Church of the Ascension Bandarawela.  Both the primary and senior students took part at this annual service of worship.

Address by Dr. Nelson Leslie Reginald, Astrophysicist, NASAAddress by Dr. Nelson Leslie Reginald, Astrophysicist, NASA

Dr. Nelson Leslie Reginald, Astrophysicist, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, USA visited the school on March 17th and addressed the students.  His  highly motivational speech was on the subjects of “solar eclipse”, “radiation levels” and “solar flares”.  In addition, he inspired the students with details of his own experience and his arduous journey towards becoming an Astrophysicist. Dr. Reginald is an old boy of S. Thomas' College, Mount Lavinia.


Chemi-X Practical Exhibition

 

The Chemi-X Practical Exhibition was held in a grand scale from the 16th to the 18th of February 2016. Thousands of students in the Badulla District took part in the exhibition. The practical activities in the exhibition was highly appreciated by Educational Directors and Teachers.

 


Annual Sports Meet

The Sports Meet was held amidst a large gathering at the Municipal Council Grounds, Bandarawela on Wednesday the 3rd of February 2016. Hon. Harin Fernando, Minister of Telecommunication and Digital Infrastructure graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and Mr. J.U. Ramawickrama, Superintendent of Police was the Guest of Honour.

 


English Day

The English Day was held on the 30th of January 2016. Dr. Romola Rasool Senior Lecturer English Language Teaching Unit, University of Kelaniya graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.

74th Founder's Day

The 74th Founder’s Day was held with a communion service celebrated by Revd. Marc Billimoria, Warden, S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia followed by a general assembly and a  Leadership Programme for Prefects organized by the Old Boys Association on the 20th of January 2016.

A token was awarded to Ruvindu Udesh Bamunuge who was ranked District 1st at the G.C.E. (A/L) Examination 2015 in the Physical Science Stream. The award was presented by Mr. Dhakshitha Serasundera on behalf of the OBA.
